Dear Dr. K, I think I have ED. What treatments are available?
Erectile Dysfunction, or ED, is a medical problem that, in the past, went undiscussed and untreated. With the advent of "the little blue pill", all of that has changed. You can't turn on the TV without seeing a commercial for one of the currently popular ED medications. You can even talk to a physician by phone and get the medications delivered to you at home without having to have an "embarrassing office visit.
THERE'S NO ON/OFF SWITCH FOR ROMANCE
The pills are usually effective, but they need to be taken well before any "planned romantic activity." Who plans romantic activity? Also, the pills may have unpleasant side effects-headaches, "blue vision," and an erection lasting longer than 4 hours. (More about that in another blog.)
DON'T JUST TREAT THE SYMPTOMS
The primary drawback of the ED pills and other methods of treatment (topical agents and penile injections) is that all these modalities are treating the symptom, ED, and not its cause. ED is usually the result of decreased bloodflow to the penis and may be a manifestation of a man's overall vascular health. ED may be the first indicator of developing vascular disease in other areas of the body.
ACOUSTIC WAVE THERAPY FOR ED
Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT) is a medical treatment that is directed at the cause of ED-plaque buildup and narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to the penis. AWT is applied directly to the penis and surrounding tissues, breaking down the deposited plaque and increasing the bloodflow. It is a topical treatment and involve no injections or incisions. The treatments cause minimal discomfort and do require any down time.
Renewal Medical Centers of North Texas provides Acoustic Wave Therapy. Our staff and physicians will be glad to provide you with more information and answer any questions you may have about AWT and whether you are a candidate for this therapy.
